Though it's been a hard summer, there were some great 00:53.920 --> 00:58.840 things and school got opened up and all the labor and intensive things that went 00:58.840 --> 01:04.720 into that. And I praise God for it. It's on its way and things look as good as 01:04.720 --> 01:12.320 could be expected. We've got a full schedule of teachers and we were so 01:12.320 --> 01:18.520 thankful for that. So I would like to at this time to turn to 2 Samuel verse 11. 01:18.520 --> 01:23.720 And I just want to read something. This is an exciting sermon. I'm glad I got this 01:23.720 --> 01:30.800 time because sometimes they're awfully hard. This is a hard scripture to handle 01:30.800 --> 01:38.040 but at the same time is what we need. The title is There is a God. There is a God 01:38.040 --> 01:44.040 and he gives it and this is in that series of Luke, Katie, and Studies, the 01:44.040 --> 01:49.880 master storyteller. But he calls it thin arrogance. You know when you're up there 01:49.880 --> 01:54.640 on a mountain, the air is thin and when you're up there, you know, so pride and 01:54.640 --> 02:02.040 fill of self, love and selfishness, you're up there in that higher 02:02.040 --> 02:07.760 environment which is pretty much arrogance, thin arrogance. You see the play on 02:07.760 --> 02:14.640 words. Let's turn all of us to 2 Samuel verse 11 through 13. We won't read all 02:14.640 --> 02:19.760 of it but let's just start off for 2 Samuel chapter 11 and beginning in 02:19.800 --> 02:24.440 verse 1. We can just hold your Bible there. There'll be some other scriptures 02:24.440 --> 02:28.440 but this is the heart and soul of the sermon. You know this story. It's a sad 02:28.440 --> 02:33.000 story. If I were God, I wouldn't have put the story in there but then I'm not God 02:33.000 --> 02:37.320 and that's also part of the sermon too. None of us are God. In the spring at the 02:37.320 --> 02:42.320 time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the kings men and the 02:42.320 --> 02:47.640 whole Israel army but David remained in Jerusalem. Now that's the part that's 02:47.680 --> 02:51.120 the arrogant part. Kings were supposed to go out in the spring time and fight 02:51.120 --> 02:56.200 the battle with the Ammonites but king stayed home and messed around and didn't 02:56.200 --> 02:59.680 do what he was supposed to do and he wasn't in the place he was supposed to 02:59.680 --> 03:07.480 be. God had assigned him a project but he didn't go along with God. If you 03:07.480 --> 03:14.280 ever sometimes not gone along with God and so in verse 2 he was messing around 03:14.280 --> 03:17.720 on top of the roof top. Now that isn't where a king is supposed to be and it 03:17.720 --> 03:22.200 was toward evening time and he looked down there and guess what? From the roof 03:22.200 --> 03:26.920 he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful. Larry mentioned last 03:26.920 --> 03:31.720 week that you know you can't even get a picture of the programs that are clean 03:31.720 --> 03:36.360 or bad because they're all advertised with the same generally speaking this 03:36.360 --> 03:41.240 kind of a figure and what was that yo-yo doing on top of the deal looking down 03:41.240 --> 03:46.280 on somebody else's home and somebody else's wife and so we know that some 03:46.280 --> 03:52.520 problems came from that. I would also share with you verse 5. He gets in 03:52.520 --> 03:58.800 trouble of course and I think verse 5 we get that phrase but I am pregnant. 03:58.800 --> 04:05.960 Wasn't his wife was it? see his bride and all and the idea was that while he 04:26.880 --> 04:30.680 was there then the king wouldn't be blamed on the little child that was 04:30.680 --> 04:36.640 coming but but the husband who had the right to have this child and so you see 04:37.320 --> 04:43.360 he had the lie to do that and you know lies just aren't good news for anybody 04:43.360 --> 04:49.680 and certainly not a godly king appointed to great works and then let's take verse 04:49.680 --> 04:55.320 13 in matter of fact he was so concerned about this and his lying and you know 04:55.320 --> 04:59.360 once you start into sin and you start telling a few lies you have to cover it 04:59.360 --> 05:02.760 with a mess of other lies don't you before long you're overwhelmed by what 05:02.800 --> 05:07.920 you have done you're not in control and lie proceeds lie and lie proceeds lie 05:07.920 --> 05:13.040 until it becomes a kind of lifestyle and that can happen to anybody and he 05:13.040 --> 05:19.040 causes Uriah to be drunken but he raises up this is a noble man and he goes 05:19.040 --> 05:24.000 back and he stays with the king to guard him and then he goes back into war and 05:24.000 --> 05:30.440 then guess what he puts Uriah in the front line to die verse 13 says this 05:30.440 --> 05:37.760 less seen so your Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and next at David's 05:37.760 --> 05:43.400 invitation he ate and drank with him and David made him drunk now then look at 05:43.400 --> 05:49.640 verse 15 put Uriah on the front line where the fighting is fierce then 05:49.640 --> 05:55.800 withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die so he adds to a cheap lie 05:55.840 --> 06:02.400 which is so easy to do a more expensive thing a commitment to murder somebody 06:02.400 --> 06:08.040 who is innocent one of God's elect warriors you see well I don't want to be 06:08.040 --> 06:13.600 like that guy but in some ways I do look at the next thing in that story when 06:13.600 --> 06:21.560 Uriah dies she becomes David's wife and bears him a son that's in verse 26 so 06:21.560 --> 06:28.040 he's gone full circle there hasn't he and the Ammonites kill the husband that 06:28.040 --> 06:33.120 takes care of that problem it's all legally done but I want you to think of 06:33.120 --> 06:37.800 the dangers of small sins just being in a place where you're not supposed to be 06:37.800 --> 06:41.920 and not doing the thing you were intended to do that basically was the 06:41.920 --> 06:48.880 arrogance of that great king God I don't care I choose to do this thing you see 06:48.920 --> 06:54.520 in verse 27 we read some of the most poignant words that you will ever read 06:54.520 --> 07:02.920 in all of the Bible and there it says verse 26 and 7 when Uriah's wife heard 07:02.920 --> 07:06.680 that her husband was dead she mourned for him and after the time of mourning was 07:06.680 --> 07:11.040 over David had her brought to his house and she became his wife and bore him a 07:11.040 --> 07:19.360 son but the thing that David did did not please the Lord now that story would 07:19.360 --> 07:23.600 certainly have made something that be highly acceptable on TV especially at 07:23.600 --> 07:29.400 children's primetime hours wouldn't it today that would make a glorious story 07:29.400 --> 07:36.560 on modern TV or film or whatever medium that the medium chooses to use that 07:36.560 --> 07:42.400 would serve it a great hearing wouldn't it would be a very popular thing but you 07:42.400 --> 07:47.240 know since it did not please the Lord there was a everything the effect of sin is even 09:19.120 --> 09:27.800 difficult to bury in the grandness of God's gift of grace what a sad society 09:27.800 --> 09:36.840 that we must not underestimate the
